Grayling Fish Hatchery

The Grayling Fish Hatchery was constructed in 1914 to restore Au Sable River’s trout population which had been severely affected by the timber operations. The hatchery is now operated by the Anglers of the Au Sable and the Crawford County Board of Commissioners who have been implementing plans to improve the hatchery as an educational resource and attraction to all. Part of these plans include the removal of a dam along the East Branch of the Au Sable River to enhance fish passage through the area. Spicer Group was brought in to assist with this process and provide engineering and design services for the removal of the dam and mitigation of the river habitat. The plans have been completed and are approved. The project is currently awaiting funding and will include removal of the existing weir structure, undersized culverts, and existing footbridge, along with the installation of boulders and habitat structures to augment habitat in the project area.
