B2 Pump Station

This pump station plays a critical role in controlling drainage at the Shiawassee River State Game Area for both flood prevention and wildlife habitat. The design of this pump station included source water supply review, pump selection review, electrical design and structural design.  This station was modeled closely to the Prior Road Pump Station which was a very successful project designed by Spicer Group at the Shiawassee River State Game Area. This new station is equipped with a 40 Hp Cascade Pump Company Model 20AP axial flow pump with a variable frequency drive and includes multiple slide gates for directing and controlling water. The pump is rated for 10,500 GPM at 5.5’ TDH.

During the design phase, Spicer Group worked closely with the client to identify the desired pumping rate, flooding acreage, desired pumping time, and desired alarms and/or controls for the station. The structural design included housing the new pump and designing a new cast-in-place concrete structure sized to adequately accommodate the pump, junction chamber, gates, and all piping.  Spicer Group also played a key role in ensuring the structural integrity of the station related to the surrounding soils. The soil conditions at the pump station required the installation of a deep foundation system, called Chance helical piles, to compensate for the poor soils and constantly wet soil conditions at that pump station.
