MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT – INTERCOUNTY DRAIN PROGRAM
The Spicer Group Water Resources staff recently completed a six-year project in partnership with the Intercounty Drains Program at the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) to create a Geographic Information System (GIS) for managing intercounty drains throughout Michigan. Spicer Group and MDARD collaborated with the State Archivist’s office to digitally scan historical records and maps with the goal of mapping every intercounty drain in the state. The resulting document management system (DMS), integrated into the GIS platform, provides interactive data on drain locations, conditions, maintenance history, and additional details. The DMS/GIS application has standardized operations, improved access to historical documentation, and facilitated coordination for the management of Michigan’s intercounty drains.
