Hidden Forest Drain, Detention Basin Restoration, and Channel Stabilization

Spicer Group led the design, bidding, and construction oversight for improvements to the Hidden Forest Drain, a system composed of open channel, enclosed storm sewer, and a detention basin. The project included work to restore the system’s detention basin, which had lost its functionality over time due to sedimentation and lack of defined grading.

To renovate the basin's storage and conveyance capacity, excavation was completed starting at the invert of the outlet pipe, with grading extending outward at a consistent 2% slope in all directions. This approach was designed to maximize stormwater storage while improving outflow control and reducing localized flooding. The restored basin now provides increased capacity to manage peak flows and reduce flood frequency and duration in the surrounding area.

The project also addressed severe erosion in the open channel portion of the drain, which had been compromised by steep grades and sandy soils. Improvements included reshaping, regrading, and armoring approximately 1,850 feet of open channel and storm sewer to stabilize the banks and improve conveyance. New storm sewer segments were installed to enhance flow through the system and reduce surface water impacts to adjacent properties.
