Sebewaing Sanitary Collection Improvements
The Village of Sebewaing’s sewers date back to the mid 1950s and have had a history of inflow and infiltration issues over the years that was contributing to the problem of early discharges from their lagoon treatment system due to excessive flows. A plan was devised to break up the collection system into four areas that would be cleaned and televised over a four-year period. Those video inspections were reviewed, and the condition of each pipe was graded (A-E).
The pipes identified as D or E, which were in the worst condition, were lined the following year. This continued until all areas of the system were televised and lined. After the sewers were addressed, the manholes in need of repair were corrected as well as protruding laterals removed from the system. While wet weather flows were significantly decreased, the lagoon system still had capacity issues that forced the Village to add another lagoon cell. In addition, changing regulations will require that phosphorus treatment be needed.
