Belleville Downtown Improvements

Spicer Group served as the prime consultant for the design and construction engineering of approximately one mile of roadway reconstruction, streetscape, and water main replacement along Main Street in downtown Belleville. The streetscape included new brick pavers and crosswalks, sidewalk replacement, landscaping, new tree grate foundations, and amenities such as benches, wall seating, decorative columns, and fences. The installation of over 3,000 feet of new 12-inch water main helped improve flow and pressure City-wide, increased public safety, and reduced the overall cost and inconvenience of frequent repairs.

During the design of the pavement cross section, several options were analyzed. A new 9-inch concrete roadway design was chosen over a 4-inch overlay because structural defects in the original roadway could break through the overlay in a short time therefore adding to the overall cost of roadway maintenance. And while the lifespan of an overlay is approximately two years, the life expectancy of the concrete is approximately 20 years. This added to the overall cost effectiveness of the design.
