SAVAGE DRAIN FLOOD CONTROL
The Savage Drain project in Albee Township, Saginaw County, Michigan, was initiated by a petition filed to address the replacement of the flap gate structure at the outlet of the Savage Drain into the Misteguay Creek Intercounty Drain, as well as the replacement of the Bueche Road bridge over the Savage Drain. Additionally, the project called for the establishment of a maintenance lane along the existing dikes between the outlet and Bueche Road. The project focuses on flood control and infrastructure improvements along the Savage Drain, specifically between Bueche Road and Misteguay Creek.
Spicer Group was contracted to complete the topographical survey, along with all designs and engineering for the project. The scope of work included a 300 linear feet dike and channel reconstruction along Misteguay Creek, the installation of three 8x8 foot flap gates and two 48-inch flap gates, 210 linear feet of 8x8 foot concrete box culvert, 120 linear feet of 48-inch round reinforced concrete pipe, 250 cubic yards of cast-in-place headwall, 100 square yards of subgrade undercut, and 400 square yards of miscellaneous riprap.
At the first site location, the existing iron bridge at Bueche Road was removed and replaced with a 24-foot long, reinforced, pre-cast concrete sectional box culvert. The subgrade elevation to support the structure was designed to be approximately 14 to 15 feet below the existing roadway surface, at an elevation of 576 to 577 feet. Prior to the placement of the box culvert sections, 12 inches of MDOT 6AA crushed limestone was placed on the subgrade to ensure stability. Notably, the Bueche Road crossing was not included in this portion of the project.
At the second site location, near Misteguay Creek, the project involved removing three existing reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) culverts at the Savage Drain outlet and replacing them with a cast-in-place concrete flap gate structure. This new structure is supported by an approximately 2.5-foot thick concrete mat foundation, which is designed to bear at a depth of about 25 feet below the top of the earthen dike, or approximately at elevation 573 feet. These improvements are expected to enhance the functionality and durability of the drainage system, ultimately reducing the risk of flooding and increasing the overall effectiveness of the infrastructure.
