First Year of Internship

  • Become proficient with basic structural calculations and methods

  • Learn where to find typical loads used in analysis

  • Learn to read structural plans and specifications

  • Develop basic AutoCAD skills

SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE:

TRAINING CERTIFICATIONS YOU WILL ACQUIRE:

  • OSHA 10

  • Working in Traffic Safety

  • Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control

  • Troxler Safety

  • MDOT Density Technology

  • Assisting with field work for data collection, site inspections, and observations

  • Assist with project documentation and reporting

ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCE YOU WILL ACQUIRE:

Second Year of Internship

  • Basic structural analysis and design of projects of all material types (steel, concrete, masonry, and wood)

  • Ability to track loads through structural systems to determine load path and critical structural elements

  • Learn about bridge design and bridge load rating calculations

  • Develop Civil 3D and advanced AutoCAD skills

SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE:

TRAINING CERTIFICATIONS YOU WILL ACQUIRE:

  • Bridge Safety Inspection

  • Intro to RISA and 3D Modeling

  • Intro to Bridge Load Rating

  • MDOT Load Rating Webinar and Workshop

ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCE YOU WILL ACQUIRE:

  • Prepare engineering-related calculations and develop drawings and visual aids

  • Work closely with CAD Designers to develop knowledge to produce construction documents related to structural and bridge engineering

  • Prepare project development reports, type selection studies, construction drawings, project special provisions/specifications, estimate of costs, and other project documents

  • Perform basic calculations to analyze and design individual building components using RISA 3D or other analysis software

  • Complete existing condition reports for bridge inspection and bridge scoping projects

Third & Fourth Year of Internship

ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCE YOU WILL ACQUIRE:

  • The ability to provide analysis and design for new rehabilitation of all types of highway structures

  • The ability to complete bridge load ratings for standard highway bridges using AASHTO BrR software with minimal guidance

  • Learn advanced techniques in RISA and 3D Modeling

SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE:

  • Bentley Open Bridge Design
