Steih Park
After receiving a 2022 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Development Grant for $269,400, Monitor Charter Township decided to improve Herbert West Steih Memorial Park, which sites along 305 feet of the Kawkawlin River, spanning 1.24 acres. The park originally had few amenities and was experiencing erosion along the riverbank. Renovating Steih Park and improving ease of access to the river was identified by the community as a priority and is highlighted in the Township’s Recreation Master Plan.
Spicer Group was hired by the Township to provide survey, engineering design, and construction administration services for the park improvements, which included parking lot upgrades, a pavilion, a concrete ramp for launching canoes and kayaks, new benches and picnic tables, landscaping, and interpretive signage. Additionally, new fishing lunkers were installed to help stabilize the bank and prevent erosion.
As part of the project Spicer Group also designed an interpretive sign that includes information on the history of the Kawkawlin River, the watershed, and the organisms and ecosystems supported by the river.
