Rifkin Non-Ferrous Processing Plant

Rifkin Steel has been in operation for 80 years with operations in Saginaw, Traverse City, West Branch and Lansing. Its original Saginaw location was situated next to the Saginaw River since 1945. Rifkin received Michigan Economic Development funds to relocate the original Saginaw facility site across the Saginaw River to a much larger site next to General Motors. The new originally hosted a large industrial facility that was demolished leaving the site vacant. By moving to the new site, the City of Saginaw could move forward with plans to redevelop the original Rifkin site as part of its riverfront redevelopment plan. Spicer Group was hired to provide an entirely new site design for the new vacant site which included a site and building plan to relocate the heavy recycling equipment and weigh scales. Spicer Group’s design included stormwater detention, water and sanitary sewer, and roadway egress and ingress. Tying the site into M-13 was very important as significant daily heavy truck traffic enters and exits the facility on a routine basis. Total cost to relocate Rifkin’s site to the new 40 acre site was around $18 million.
