Monitor Manhole Inspection App

Monitor Charter Township was recently awarded a Stormwater, Asset Management and Wastewater (SAW) grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to build an asset management program. Spicer Group developed a database application for the Township to help conduct the necessary sanitary sewer manhole “Level One” inspection requirements to hasten the first steps in building the Township’s Asset Management Program (AMP).

The tablet-optimized app includes all available as-built plans for the Township’s sanitary sewer system and is set up to let Spicer’s professional inspectors quickly and efficiently fill out fields of data that pertain to the conditions and characteristics of each individual manhole within the system.

Inspectors can:

  • Locate manholes within the system using the tablet-linked GIS

  • Log the manhole’s exact location

  • Log any defects with the manhole, along with the criticality of correcting those defects

  • Upload photographs of the manhole to the system

The collected information becomes linked back to the GIS system, hydraulic capacity models and other products of the AMP. This information meets the requirements of the Michigan SAW Grant program and also follows the standards of the National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) and the Manhole Assessment and Certification Program (MACP).

The app is also adaptable, allowing the Township to add other Department of Public Works modules to the asset management system.
